Black zip ties are the ones to reach for when the job is outside or has to last. Ours are UV stabilised nylon 66, so they keep their grip through Australian sun instead of going brittle after a season. We stock them from a light 2.5mm tie for tidying leads up to 12.7mm ties for heavy industrial bundling, packed 100 to a bag.
Choose the width by the load, then the length by the bundle
Width sets the strength. Length only decides how big a bundle the tie can reach around. Pick the narrowest width that is rated comfortably above the load, then choose a length that wraps the bundle with tail to spare.
| Width | Breaking strain | Lengths we stock | Typical jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5mm | 8kg | 100, 160, 200mm | Light wiring, small looms, tidying leads |
| 3.6mm | 18kg | 150, 200, 300mm | General outdoor wiring, irrigation line, garden mesh |
| 4.8mm | 22kg | 200, 250, 300, 370, 450mm | Star pickets, conduit bundles, trailer harnesses |
| 7.6mm | 55kg | 200, 300, 370, 450, 530, 750mm | Heavy bundles, fencing, hoses and pipework |
| 9mm | 80kg | 530, 620, 760, 920, 1220mm | Large pipe and hose runs, site and farm work |
| 12.7mm | See product page | 230, 380, 560, 730mm | The heaviest industrial bundling in the range |
Breaking strain is the load at which a tie fails in a straight pull. Leave a margin below it, especially where there is vibration, movement or heat.
Why black for outdoor jobs
Sunlight breaks down nylon that has no UV protection, which is why a cheap tie can crack and let go within months outdoors. The black ties in this range are UV stabilised, so they are the right choice for fences, roofs, solar mounts, trailers and anything else left in the weather. Where a lighter colour looks neater, see our white zip ties, and for colour-coding circuits or stock, our colour zip ties.
If the job also involves high heat, salt spray or chemicals, nylon may not be enough. Stainless steel zip ties in 304 and 316 grade are made for those conditions.

Common questions
Are black or white zip ties better?
It depends on where they go. Both are UV resistant nylon 66, so either can go outdoors, and width for width they are the same strength. Choose black to blend in against dark wiring and frames, and white to match light-coloured cabling or a neat board.
Can I reuse these zip ties?
No. Standard black zip ties have a one-way locking head and are cut off when you are done. If you need to open and close a tie, use our releasable black zip ties.
Which width do I need for heavy duty work?
For heavy bundles, start at 7.6mm (55kg). Step up to 9mm (80kg) or 12.7mm for the largest loads. The table above shows the breaking strain of each width.
